On the other hand, I think if the structure is so slender that buckling occurs at low stresses, or the deflection/vibration control dominates too much over the other aspects, then it is an indication of an unfeasible structural system.

Of course, if the 'fancy-factor' overwhelms other considerations including budget, then the above reasoning is futile.Imre Laufernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6470543006314152962.post-8116178015861023972014-01-27T16:04:15.115+00:002014-01-27T16:04:15.115+00:00In any event, design of this structure is likely t...In any event, design of this structure is likely to be governed by a combination of local and global buckling effects, which the FEA also tells you nothing useful about. It could also be governed by deflection or vibration criteria, again not illustrated on the presentation, but I would not expect these to be significant given the large box girders depicted. The Happy Pontisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15252272118786667592noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6470543006314152962.post-15912791965115076932014-01-27T08:30:58.892+00:002014-01-27T08:30:58.892+00:00As a bridge engineer, I took a closer look at the ...As a bridge engineer, I took a closer look at the presentation on the homepage of Salford (http://www.salford.gov.uk/d/Tonkin-Liu-Limited-with-Arup.pdf), especially at the last page concerning structure.

The nice FEM-picture with the stresses is quite deceptive, since it shows the stresses on a logarithmic scale. The stresses between 75-3690 N/mm2 are lumped into a single colour. A steel structure with only 75 N/mm2 as the maximum stress would be utterly overdesigned, while 3690 N/mm2 would exceed the yield stress of S355 steel more than 10 times.Imre Laufernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6470543006314152962.post-11658758397742354182014-01-25T14:01:32.797+00:002014-01-25T14:01:32.797+00:00Yes I do, unusually for someone who's way into...Yes I do, unusually for someone who's way into straight lines. And as different as it is from its surroundings, it doesn't bother me. But I'm concerned about lawsuits from idiots getting hurt climbing the supports--remove the lower holes maybe?--and whether the community can afford something like this and still meet people's other needs. I live in the US and we can't even maintain our ordinary bridges, let alone such minutia as care of human beings in need.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6470543006314152962.post-14724978347655849952014-01-25T04:42:58.079+00:002014-01-25T04:42:58.079+00:00Reading between the lines then, you don't like...Reading between the lines then, you don't like it?!Colinnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6470543006314152962.post-53353846740034001802014-01-25T01:57:17.256+00:002014-01-25T01:57:17.256+00:00H.P. On the one hand I am not averse to weird, whimsical or unconventional designs, and for whatever anyone can come up with there is someone who will like it, esthetics isn't something absolute--but I would also want something practical, safe, user-friendly even for the feeble, and affordable, in my town.
